Supplementary cover · Outpatient treatment

Add outpatient benefits. Understand invoice risks.

Outpatient supplementary policies may add cover for certain private invoices or selected extras. For broader policies, the GKV cost-reimbursement procedure often plays a central role.

Why does outpatient supplementary cover exist?

GKV generally provides necessary outpatient care as benefits in kind. Supplementary policies can add defined additional costs from private invoices or expressly agreed extras.

Typical benefits

Depending on the policy, one or more areas may be agreed:

  • Differences arising from privately billed outpatient treatment.
  • Glasses or contact lenses up to maximum amounts.
  • Selected preventive examinations.
  • Services provided by Heilpraktiker — non-medical practitioners licensed under German law — subject to the policy’s specified fee schedule.
  • Certain medicines, therapies or medical aids.

Who may want to review it?

  • People in GKV who deliberately want to use privately billed outpatient care.
  • People with a clearly defined extra need rather than a broad package.
  • People able to manage prepayment and reimbursement.
  • Anyone able to plan for premium and possible personal contributions long term.

How the GKV cost-reimbursement procedure works.

It changes the billing route for the selected area of GKV care, but does not automatically expand the statutory entitlement.

The billing route

  • Treatment is received against a private invoice.
  • The invoice is initially paid by the patient.
  • GKV reimburses at most what it would have paid as a benefit in kind.
  • The statutory health insurer may deduct administration costs of up to five percent.

Remaining risks

  • The supplementary policy only pays the agreed percentage for insured services.
  • Fee-schedule limits, deductibles and annual caps may apply.
  • The GKV cost-reimbursement choice is binding for at least one calendar quarter.
  • Health questions, waiting periods and exclusions may apply.
Illustrative example

Private invoice, GKV share and remaining cost.

A person in GKV chooses cost reimbursement for outpatient care and receives a private invoice. GKV reimburses its statutory share. A supplementary policy can only pay the remaining difference within the agreed scope and limits.

Prepayment, GKV share, binding period and possible administration deduction are explained.

Compare limits

Percentages, limits under the German Medical Fee Schedule (Gebührenordnung für Ärzte, GOÄ), caps and deductibles are compared.

Frequently asked questions about outpatient cover.

The precise billing route depends on the GKV choice and supplementary policy.

Is cost reimbursement always required?

Often for policies covering outpatient private invoices. Separate benefit modules such as glasses may work differently.

Is every private invoice covered?

No. Insured services, percentages, caps, fee limits and exclusions determine reimbursement.

Are Heilpraktiker services automatically included?

No. Services provided by Heilpraktiker — non-medical practitioners licensed under German law — must be expressly insured and often have special fee schedules and annual caps.
