Contents insurance calculator: sum insured

If the sum insured is too low, household contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) may only pay part of a claim. With the flat rate per square metre, you are usually on the safe side.

Your details

At €650 per m², many insurers waive the right to claim underinsurance.

How it is calculated

Sum insured = floor area × amount per square metre. If you own particularly valuable furniture, electronics or collections, it is better to estimate the replacement value item by item.

Valuables such as jewellery or cash are usually subject to separate limits, often 20% of the sum insured.

Frequently asked questions

What is underinsurance?

If the actual value of your household contents exceeds the sum insured, the insurer can reduce its payout proportionally. A waiver of underinsurance (Unterversicherungsverzicht) protects you against this if the agreed sum per square metre is reached.
