Supplementary health insurance: add to GKV, do not replace it.

Private supplementary policies can add individual benefits to German statutory health insurance, such as dental treatment, hospital options, outpatient extras or cover abroad. They do not turn GKV membership into comprehensive private health insurance.

GKV remains in placeSeparate modulesPolicy limits

Why does supplementary cover exist?

GKV provides broad statutory care, but it does not meet every preference or reimburse every private bill. A supplementary policy can cover a clearly defined additional area.

What it can do

  • Add agreed benefits for dental treatment and dentures.
  • Add agreed hospital accommodation or privately billed medical treatment.
  • Cover selected outpatient services or reimbursement gaps.
  • Cover medically necessary treatment and medical repatriation abroad, depending on the policy.
  • Daily sickness allowance insurance and supplementary long-term care insurance are separate products with their own conditions; they are not benefits of a dental, outpatient or hospital policy.

What it does not do

  • It does not replace compulsory health insurance.
  • It does not turn GKV into comprehensive private health insurance.
  • It does not automatically pay every private invoice.
  • It does not remove exclusions, waiting periods, benefit scales or maximum amounts.

Who may want to review a module?

The relevant question is which benefit gap matters, not how many extras a policy advertises.

Possible target groups

  • People in GKV who want clearly defined extra dental, hospital or outpatient benefits.
  • Families considering an individual policy for each person.
  • Travellers who need cover beyond the GKV framework abroad.
  • Employees or self-employed people reviewing an income gap during illness.
  • People who want to prepare for remaining costs in long-term care.

Important limits

  • Known or recommended treatment may be excluded.
  • Health questions, waiting periods and benefit scales vary by policy.
  • Maximum amounts, percentages, fee-schedule limits and deductibles may apply.
  • Premiums can change; every insured person generally needs their own policy.
Illustrative example

Two wishes, two separate modules.

A person in GKV wants additional cover for higher-quality dentures and a single room in hospital. Two separate supplementary policies with different health questions, premiums and limits can be examined. The person remains insured in GKV.

Frequently asked questions about supplementary cover.

The exact scope is always determined by the selected policy.

Does GKV become PKV?

No. GKV remains in place. The private policy only adds agreed benefits and is not comprehensive private health insurance.

Are there health questions?

Many policies ask them. Exceptions may exist, for example for certain travel policies. All answers must be complete and truthful.

Are children automatically covered?

No. There is generally no automatic family cover. Each person needs a policy or explicit inclusion.
