Step 05 · Home and belongings

Household contents: protect your movable belongings.

Furniture, clothing, electronics and many individual everyday items can add up to considerable value. Household contents insurance can repair or replace these belongings at replacement value after specified insured events.

Why does household contents insurance exist?

A major loss can affect many belongings at the same time. The question is whether the entire household could be replaced from available savings.

Household contents generally include movable items used to furnish, use or consume within a household. The insurance applies to the home specified in the policy and, within contractual limits, to certain ancillary rooms and belongings temporarily kept elsewhere.

It does not protect the building itself. Items permanently attached to the building generally belong under the owner's residential building insurance. Tenants and owners should therefore first clarify which item belongs to which policy.

What does it typically cover?

Household belongings are not insured against every event, only against the risks expressly named in the policy.

Typical benefits

  • Damage to household contents caused by fire, direct lightning strike or explosion
  • Certain losses caused by the escape of mains water, such as after an insured burst pipe
  • Burglary, robbery and vandalism following a burglary
  • Storm and hail under the applicable policy requirements
  • Depending on the policy, necessary clearing, storage or temporary accommodation costs

Limits and conditions

  • Theft without forced entry is not automatically insured as burglary.
  • Flooding, sewer backup or backflow and other natural hazards generally require an additional module.
  • Valuables, bicycles and belongings temporarily outside the home may have separate limits.
  • A sum insured set too low can result in underinsurance.
  • Whether gross negligence is covered depends on the policy wording.

For whom can household cover be appropriate?

The need depends less on housing type or customer group than on total replacement value and available savings.

RENTED HOME

Tenants

Even without owning the building, movable belongings may have a value that would be difficult to replace after a total loss.

OWN PROPERTY

Property owners

Contents and building need separate consideration. Movable belongings are not automatically included in residential building insurance.

The relevant points are the quantity and replacement value of belongings, valuables, bicycles, items used for work and which losses can be borne personally.

Illustrative example

Fire with several consequential losses

A technical defect starts a fire in a home. Furniture, clothing and electronics are damaged by fire, smoke and extinguishing water. Whether and to what extent household contents insurance pays depends on the cause, insured belongings, sum insured and policy conditions.
