Make dental costs more predictable. Read the conditions closely.

Dental insurance can reduce personal costs for dentures and other agreed dental services. Reimbursement percentages are only part of the picture: benefit scales, ongoing treatment and policy limits also matter.

Fixed subsidyBenefit scalesOngoing treatment

Why does dental insurance exist?

GKV contributes to dentures through a fixed subsidy for standard care. Anyone choosing treatment beyond that standard may face a substantial personal contribution.

Typical benefits

Depending on the policy, cover may include:

  • Crowns, bridges and dentures.
  • Implants and medically necessary bone augmentation.
  • Inlays and higher-quality fillings.
  • Professional cleaning within policy limits.
  • Orthodontics under specified conditions.

Who may want to review it?

  • People in GKV who want higher-quality dentures.
  • People who do not want to fund every possible contribution solely from savings.
  • People without treatment already recommended who are considering future protection.
  • Anyone able to carry the premium long term and define the desired benefits clearly.

Percentages alone are not enough.

A policy may show a high reimbursement rate while limiting payment through the inclusion of GKV benefits, annual scales or other caps.

Before the policy starts

  • Answer health and dental questions completely and truthfully.
  • Disclose missing teeth and existing dental work.
  • Recommended, planned or ongoing treatment is often excluded.
  • Waiting periods may apply depending on the policy.

When claiming

  • Dental benefit scales often limit reimbursement in the first years.
  • The GKV fixed subsidy may already be included in the stated percentage.
  • Implant numbers, bone work, materials and laboratory costs may be limited.
  • Check fee limits under the German Dental Fee Schedule (Gebührenordnung für Zahnärzte, GOZ) and permanent maximum amounts.
Illustrative example

A crown costs more than standard care.

GKV pays a diagnosis-based fixed subsidy. Depending on the reimbursement rate, benefit scale and conditions, a supplementary policy may pay a further part of the invoice. A personal contribution may still remain.

Frequently asked questions about dental cover.

Exact reimbursement can only be determined from the policy conditions and treatment and cost plan.

What does GKV pay?

As at 2026, the fixed subsidy is generally 60 percent of standard care, rising to 70 or 75 percent with documented preventive visits. Additional costs remain without suitable cover.

Can recommended treatment be insured?

Treatment that has begun, been recommended or documented is often excluded. The application questions and conditions are decisive.

What do 80, 90 or 100 percent mean?

The GKV share is often included. Benefit scales and limits for materials, laboratories or implants may also apply.
